Autumn Term 2014

The main focus is to teach children about the importance of happiness, health, well-being and celebrations.

In this project the children will also learn:

• How to understand and appreciate their own feelings and the feelings of others;
• How to eat healthily and how this affects your well being;
• How to keep safe and how being safe keeps us happy and well;
• How to describe emotions and feelings through drama, dance, art and music;
• About significant happy life events that are celebrated;
• How to collect information in a variety of ways, including photography, art, music, reading, ICT and writing;
• How to present information in an interesting way.

Friday 28th November
We have been finding out about Electricity this week as part of our 'Electric Rainbow' topic. We found out that electricity can come from the mains, batteries and solar power amongst other sources. There are also dangers associated with electricity - ask your child if they know any! We will finding out more about circuits next week!
We have been finding out about famous inventors, too. Ask your child why John Logie Baird was famous; what did he invent? And how about Alexander Graham Bell? They both invented things that have changed our lives!
Our Welsh skills are improving every week. We can have conversations and and ask and answer questions with real confidence.
In English we have been looking at ways to make our writing more interesting by using adjectives and connectives such as because, so, but, however etc.
We have also been busy practicing our Christmas songs for our concert. Parts/lines to learn will be coming home soon!

Friday 21st November
This week we have been developing our measuring skills using metres and centimetres. Can your child use a tape measure or ruler at home to measure items at home? Can they compare shortest and longest by finding the bigger and smaller numbers?
We have reading some books about nocturnal creatures such as owls. The children have been using the iPads to research some facts and record them. Do you know the 'proper' name for an owl's claws?!
We were lucky enough to have a visit from the Cor Meibion De Cymru. They are a fantastic male voice choir who came to perform a concert just for us. The fantastic Pencaerau School Choir also performed and were wonderful! A lovely afternoon was had by all.

Friday 14th November

We have been looking at sources of light as part of our 'Electric Rainbow' topic.

Friday 7th November

We have had a busy week the 1st week back after half term!
We have written our news from half term, focusing on our spellings and our handwriting. In Language we have been using our phonic skills to build words with the digraphs ar (as in car) ow (as in cow) and ou (as in shout).
Our Maths skills are coming on well as do lots of practice of our times tables and how to use them to solve practical problems.
We did lots of practice for our class assembly on Frida, too.  Thank you to all the parents who came to watch and support your children. I'm sure you will all agree it was a big success! We are all very proud of how well the children performed - acting and singing beautifully.

Friday 10th October
This week we have been designing our own "Wanted" posters for the character of the fox from the Gingerbread Man story. We had to think of lots of different describing words and choose an appropriate reward for his capture!
We have also been using the photos that have been sent in from home to make a class "Happiness" book for our book corner.
In Maths the children have been using dice to add numbers together in their heads and practicing ordering numbers from smallest to largest. We also completed some pictograms about favourite fruits.
In Welsh we have made mini-books about fruit. We know how to say that we like / don't like fruit in Welsh and have been practicing having conversations about our likes and dislikes.

Friday 3rd October
We have doing lots of work on our topic of stories with happy endings. We have read and acted out The Gingerbread Man. The children have re-written the story with some super details! We also made our own gingerbread men on Friday as a special treat. I wonder if the children shared them with you when they came out of school?!
In Welsh we have asking and answering lots of questions. Can your child answer some questions with you at home? Try: Pwy wyt ti? Who are you? (____ ydw i)  Sut wyt ti? (How are you?) (Hapus ydw i!) Sawl? (How many?) (Un, dau, tri etc.) Pa liw? (What colour?) (Glas, melyn , coch etc.) We are getting more and more confident with our Welsh!

Friday 26th September
In Maths we have been developing our skills in time, finding one hour earlier and later. The arrow cards have been very useful for building numbers using hundreds, tens and units. We have been very lucky this week and have had a visit from Mark and his puppet show. We were discussing what makes a hero; Help Everyone and Respect Others.

Friday 19th September
This week we have been exploring stories with happy endings. We have chosen our favourite character and have been doing some lovely writing about them using interesting words and descriptive language.
In Maths we have been using the number square to investigate mathematical patterns and using these to work with hundreds, tens and units. We are also practicing our times tables.
As we are covering celebrations in our topic, Miss Millward came to see us and told us all about her upcoming wedding! We looked at her lovely flowers and all the pictures she has of the dresses she and her bridesmaids will wear.
We have also been getting fit with Cardiff City F.C coaches who are developing our football skills. See beneath for pictures!
Friday 12th September
We have had a busy week! The children have settled in really well to Year 2 and are already working (and playing!) hard. We have started investigating our new topic and been writing about different celebrations; why they are special and how we feel about them. Amongst other things we have also been practicing counting in tens and telling the time to o'clock and half past. We are practicing our key word spellings and writing using interesting words.
