Land Ahoy!

ILP Overview

This project has a design and technology focus and teaches
children about the properties of different materials, a range
of mechanisms and forces, and aspects of water and coastal
safety. At the heart of this project children will learn how
to write narrative stories and additional skills in recording
scientific tests and enquiries.
In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and
understanding by designing and making their own lifeboats
to rescue cargo from Captain Buttons’ sinking ship
In this project the children will learn

• About simple mechanisms such as pulleys, levers and joints;
• About forces (push, pull, floating and sinking);
• About the properties of different materials;
• How to conduct a fair test;
• About water transport through the ages and across the world;
• About aspects and features of the Welsh coastline;
• How to use a range of sources to find information;
• How to write and re-tell narrative stories.

Monday 30th June
 We have been learning about the features of the Welh coastline this week and we talked about the beaches we have visited. We were very good at identifying places like Porthcawl and Tenby from photographs.
 In Maths we have been revising making numbers using tens and units and ordering numbers to 100.

Our Educational visit to Cardiff Bay and Saint Fagans

Cardiff Bay

We walked around Cardiff Bay from the barrage to the Welsh Millennium Centre and saw lots of sights on the way.

We had fun playing in the seaside themed park.

Saint Fagans

At Saint Fagans we had our lunch and looked around the old buildings.

Monday 23rd June

We  have been investigating materials and grouping them. We learnt about natural and man made materials and investigated which materials float and sink. We used what we found out to make our own boats and we were able to choose from a variety of materials.
We had lots of fun making boats and they all float!

Monday 16th June

We have had a lovely sunny week and we have been making the most of the weather by doing lots of activities outside!

We have been playing in our new pirate ship role play area and we have acted out pirate stories. We have also worked hard writing our own pirate adventure stories too.

We all enjoyed Sports Day on Wednesday this week. Well done to everyone who took part!

Monday 9th June

We had a lot of fun on Friday when we had a football themed day to celebrate the start of the world cup .We all enjoyed trying to beat the goal keeper and some of us even scored a hat-trick!

Monday 2nd June

We have introduced our new topic this week by talking about pirates. We have a pirate ship in our small world area and we have been learning the parts of the ship. We wrote descriptions of pirates and drew treasure maps using coordinates to plot the features of a treasure island. We also made our big floor puzzle showing a map of the world, it has been interesting to find out where different countries are.

We have been speaking lots of Welsh and have learnt some new words to describe activities at the seaside. Mrs James brought Floss the bear to school and we made little books 'Ar lan y mor' for her to read.

In our maths sessions we have been learning to count in fives by making towers of cubes. We have used the x symbol and have been practising our five times table too!
