Our topic this term is Supermarket
This project has a science focus and teaches children about a range
of materials and their properties used for packaging in shops and
supermarkets and about the issues surrounding waste and re-cycling.
At the heart of this project the children will write and follow a range
of instructions and develop additional skills in creating labels, lists and captions.
In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding
by setting up and managing their own bakery section of a supermarket.
In this project the children will learn:
• How various materials react to being heated, cooled, mixed, twisted,
crushed and changed using a range of processes;
• What products are sold at supermarkets and how they are packaged;
• How to find information by interviewing, using ICT and first hand
• How to follow and write a recipe;
• How to use metric measurements of weight;
• To identify the features of a fair test;
• How to be aware of safety and hygiene when preparing food;
• To record their work in writing and through the use of digital media;
• To solve simple problems using money and recognise different coins;
• How to design and make packaging and labelling using various
techniques and vocabulary.
Monday 18th May - Friday 22nd May
We ended this week with our class assembly to show our parents all the things we have been learning about this term. We all used our loudest and clearest voices to speak and we sang beautifully too. We enjoyed acting out the story 'The Litter Muncher' which had a very important message about looking after our world.
Well done Year 1 ! Mrs James and Mr Lane are very proud of you!
We hope you all have a lovely half term holiday and you come back to school ready to work hard and have fun as we learn about a new topic.
Monday 11th May - Friday 15th May
We have some good artists in Year 1! We have been looking carefully at different types of fruit and we made observational drawings using pastels. You can see us looking carefully using magnifying glasses and we are very proud of our work.
Monday 4th May - Friday 8th May
We have been learning about how we can recycle some of the packaging of the items we buy in the supermarket. it is important to recycle as much as possible so that it doesn't end up in land fill sites. We sorted materials and found out which ones could be recycled.
We have been practising our ICT skills by drawing a picture on the computer. We have also been using the i pads to play games which help us to practise our spellings.
Monday 27th April - Friday 1st May
We have been looking at the variety of cereals and their packaging designs. We chose our ingredients and made our own cereals. We thought of suitable names and designed and made the packaging. We will be bringing them home soon and we hope they taste delicious!
Monday 20th April - Friday 24th April
We have been practising using money this week and we have also used it in our role play area. We can recognise all of the coins and we have been finding ways to make 10p using different coins.
We have also been learning about shopping in the past and we looked at how the Sainsbury's supermarket has changed from a small shop many years ago. We were able to identify lots of differences between shopping in the past and now.
