Year One

Class teacher: Mrs Stebbings

Teaching assistants: Mrs Wheeler, Miss Dearborn-Bloom and Ms Campbell Jones

Wiggle and Crawl

This project has a science focus and teaches children about

mini beasts and their habitats. At the heart of this project

children will learn to write poems using rhyme and learn

additional skills in labelling and captions.

We have our own class caterpillars. We are having so much fun observing them and watching them grow.

We created our own mini beast environment in the classroom to observe.

We had lots of fun making mini beasts and using tweezers to count the 'worms'

This project has a science focus and teaches children about a range

of materials and their properties used for packaging in shops and

supermarkets and about the issues surrounding waste and re-cycling.

At the heart of this project the children will write and follow a range

of instructions and develop additional skills in creating labels, lists

and captions.

We have had a very busy week! We have been reading the book Laura's Star and have done lots of work about it! Laura left some stars in our class along with a letter which set us a challenge... We had to get the stars back in the sky before it became dark but to do this we had to think of a wish to tell the star and write it down. Luckily we were all able to do this and could set the stars free before night time.

We followed instructions to make a fruit salad, we then wrote our own instructions independently using bullet points, finger spaces and capital letters.

After eating our delicious fruit salad we recorded what fruit everyone liked best in a frequency table and bar graph.

This week we have been looking at different packaging and what materials they are made from. We then sorted the packaging depending on the materials.

We have been using money in our class bakery through role play and acting  out the story of The Gingerbread Man.

Role play

We followed instructions to make gingerbread men which was lots of fun! After trying our delicious gingerbread men we used adjectives to describe them.

We also wrote our own instructions using bullet points, finger spaces and capital letters.

Monday 4th December – Friday 15th December

What a week it has been! We have enjoyed getting in the Christmas mood by acting and singing Christmas songs. We had a fantastic turn out for our Christmas Concert performances. A big thank you to those of you who came and showed your support. It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we are feeling super festive today in our Christmas jumpers. Thank you for all your kind donations.

Monday 20th November – Friday 1st December

Father Christmas brought us a very special delivery… a Santa Cam!

We were all so excited that Santa decided to phone Miss Boston to let her know “that he would be watching over us all”. He also told us that he would be dropping off one of his special elves on 1st December to help us get in the Christmas spirit!  However, from the large snow footprints left on our floor and a mini Christmas hat, we are excited to say that both Father Christmas and his Elf were in our class!

We have been working hard to brush up on our singing and acting skills for the Foundation Phase Christmas Play. We have also been working hard to learn our words. If your child has been selected for a speaking role, we would be grateful if you could help them to learn their lines so they get the most possible enjoyment on the day of the play.

Monday 30Th October – Friday 18th November

Wow, what a busy couple of weeks we have had! Firstly, we would like to say a big thank you to everyone that has been consistently returning their homework. In Year 1, we have enjoyed listening to, singing and watching Sesame street videos on ‘Friendship’ as part of our Friendship Week. The children particularly enjoyed watching the Anti-Bullying Assembly. However, it seems that the majority of the children particularly enjoyed our Children in Need Celebrations (please see Photograph Gallery at the bottom of this page). We even met Pudsey the Bear and danced our socks off with him! In addition, we enjoyed tasting this delicious Pudsey cake thanks to the Helyar family!

Monday 16th October – Thursday 26th October

Year One would like to say a great big thank you to Hrydai and his mum (Mrs Patel) for teaching us about Diwali (Hindu Festival of Lights). Our morning consisted of listening to the story of Rama and Sita, painting clay candle pots, colouring Hindu patterns and feasting on treats to celebrate this special occasion. Please scroll to the bottom of this page to find our Diwali photographs.

What a fang-tasic day we have had today at the Monster’s Tea Party. The children looked frightfully spooky. We had lots of fun and danced our masks off! Thank you to those of you who contributed towards the costs of the disco, food, drinks, party games and prizes. Please see our photograph album at the bottom of this page.

Monday 2nd October- Friday 15th October

Our new topic this term is called ‘Pop-Up’. This topic has a focus of Design and Technology as the children will be exploring and creating pop-up cards and books using simple mechanisms. During this topic Year 1 will listen to and re-tell traditional fairy tales through creative writing and performances.

We had a lot of fun exploring the different books at The Book Fair. To witness our enjoyment please click on ‘The Book Fair’ album in Photographs at the bottom of this page.

Monday 18th September- Friday 29th September

Macmillan Cake and Squash Morning

Thank you to everyone who made a donation and contributed to making the morning a great success. I’m sure that if they haven’t already then your child will tell you all about the fun we had in Year one.  Please click on our photo gallery at the bottom of the page to witness some of the fun that was had for yourself.

We would like to remind you that Year 1's PE is on Wednesday and Friday. Please could we remind you that it is essential for all pupils to wear appropriate kit for their PE lessons to ensure personal hygiene and safety.

Kit should include:  T-shirt, shorts or suitable trousers, trainers and a jacket if needed.

Our homework packs will be given out every Friday. Homework should be returned by Thusday at the latest so that we are able to change the homework and reading books in time for them to go out the following week.
